I often find myself reading old time logging books, pouring over the black and white photographs of giant trees and the people who fell them. Those early photographs are as close as we'll ever come to experiencing the old-growth forests that were logged early on and which would have also harboured the very biggest trees. Found growing along the edge of rivers and the ocean, giant Sitka spuce trees were often the first to go. They were easy to access and prized for their strong yet lightweight wood. Today, only roughly 4% of their original numbers remain. So when I came across this perfect row of ancient spruce, it was like stepping back into one of those black and white photographs - except this was real and in full colour. This image brings me to a place where I can picture the whole coast the way it once was.
